Brilliant Labs Opens Avalon Maker Space in St. John’s

A brand new drop-in space to help students learn through creation and the use of technology was officially opened this morning by Brilliant Labs.

The Avalon Maker Space is located at the English School District’s Conference Centre at 40 Strawberry Marsh Road in St. John’s.

Robots and laser cutters: New St. John's Makerspace is open for business

The Avalon Makerspace held its grand opening Wednesday, making it the 41st location of its kind in Newfoundland and Labrador.

In a partnership between Brilliant Labs and the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District, the building will host teachers, students and community groups who want to learn about the world of technology and design.

Thousands of Students and Youth Getting Hands-on Experience in Technology and Learning About Future Job Opportunities

Students at Vanier Elementary in St. John’s demonstrated their creativity, problem-solving skills and expertise in coding and technology today as the Honourable Brian Warr, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development and the Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, updated the province on work to enhance the development of technology skills in young people. This initiative is part of government’s overall efforts to increase technology sector business activity and private sector jobs. The ministers were joined by Jeff Wilson, Executive Director, Atlantic, Brilliant Labs.

Province of New Brunswick grants $500,000 to STEM program for youth

Rohan Katreddy moved from Malaysia to Fredericton two years ago, and since then, he has thrived at George Street Middle School’s Brilliant Labs program.

Inside the lab, the 12-year-old STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fanatic learned to code and invented the app Flora Feed, an intelligent plant-watering system that cost him $40 to make.

WCT Annual Leadership Awards Recognize Canada’s Rising Stars in Closing the Gender Gap

Sarah Ryan, Program Direct, Brilliant Labs Nova Scotia will be receiving the Rising Star award for her leadership & empowerment of ICT skills for young women. The awards will be presented at WCT’s Annual Awards Gala on May 1st, 2019 at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. The must-attend event draws over 450 high-profile public and private sector leaders for a night of celebrating diversity in Canada.

Students and clients with disabilities were encouraged to get to know one another on April 17 during the launch of the Yarmouth Assistive Technology (AT) Project at the Yarmouth Life Skills Association. From whiteboard to final product, 3D printing brings learning alive in Paradise

Grade 6 students at Elizabeth Park Elementary can apply their learning thanks to new tech. When Jamie Powers' Grade 6 class learned about flight, they studied drag, lift and Bernoulli's principle. Thanks to a pair of 3D printers now in the learning commons at Elizabeth Park Elementary in Paradise, the students also got to use that knowledge to create customized plastic gliders of their own.

The Snow Day Notifier App was created by a Grade 12 student at Miramichi Valley High School. When flurries start to fly, students everywhere dream of waking up to a snow day. And now, there's an app for that — at least for several thousand students in northern New Brunswick.

Reading up on Brilliant Labs I was reminded again of what it takes to scale a making practice and reimagine the delight and utility of hands-on learning. Deeply mindful of the character and culture of the communities they work with, intentional in their approach to tools and materials, and dedicated to supporting creative, skill-building experiences that inspire, Brilliant Labs is delivering high- touch, personalized learning through materials in the diverse and often geographically remote communities across Atlantic Canada.


We held a Make Sale at BLT Senior Elementary School’s Christmas concert where we sold over 200 student-made 3D printed and Perler bead ornaments! All the proceeds from the sale were donated to the local children’s hospital, the IWK Health Centre. We earned $347 for the hospital, a fantastic result!

Jeff Hennigar's grade 5 Beechville-Lakeside-Timberlea School, Timberlea, NS, has been crafting 3D printed ornaments for sale with all proceeds going to the IWK (The IWK Foundation is a private, not-for-profit organization that raises funds to support the urgent priority needs of the IWK Health Centre).

Funding to boost coding and technology in N.L. schools

ST. JOHN’S, NL – The provincial government has announced funding to expose students to coding and give them to an opportunity take part in technology experience programs. The Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation will contribute $250,000 to establish a partnership with Brilliant Labs – an Atlantic Canadian organization that supports coding, computational thinking and Maker Education in schools.
