March Break <Brilliance>

March Break, a winter tradition to catch up on academics. Some call it spring break, while others define it as reading week. What ever you call it, it's an opportunity for students to learn a little, relax a bit with family, or expand their interests. At Brilliant Labs we want to break the mould... This March Break, in collaboration with our partners, we hosted March Break Camps that introduced students to their inner builder and natural <Brilliance>! This is Sarah's week of <Brilliance> journal:

<Monday>

On Monday I was at Cole Harbour Library for two sessions (of 20 kids each). The activities included an intro to coding, robotics, wearable tech, drone-flying, and 3D printing.

<Tuesday>

We flew more drones and printed enough pillars to build a castle fit for a queen. The day wasn't complete without a few mBot races.

<Wednesday>

The Digital Discovery camp was held at none other than the Discovery Center (we partnered with Digital Nova Scotia and the Discovery Centre). The camp included coding a video game with Scratch, robotics demos and drone-flying. There were approximately 15 youth.

Wednesday also included a session at Captain William Spry Library. I couldn't believe the turn out. It was amazing with approximately 55 youth (the best part, we were only expecting 25).

There were Makerspace demos and hands-on activities for kids aged 2 to 14.

<Thursday>

Thursday's session at the MacPhee Centre for Creative Learning included hand-on button design & making ("Inspiration buttons"), drone-flying, 3D printing, coding with Makey Makey and general discussion about job opportunities in STEAM/ICT fields. The participants were engaged and we all had a blast test flying the drones.

<Friday>

We wrapped up the week. It was busy, but the participants were gracious enough to share their listening, learning, creativity, and imagination skills. This week wouldn't have been the success it was without our friends at Cole Harbour Library, Discovery Center & Digital Nova Scotia, Captain William Spry Library, and the MacPhee Centre for Creative Learning. Thank-you for breaking the mould and inspiring <Brilliance> this March Break.
