HAPPY BRILLIANT HOLIDAYS


Brilliant Labs thought it would send our viewers into the Holiday Break by showing off our latest creation. This simple project can be completed by following the video tutorial, or simply reading along for the full list instructions. We hope your holidays are merry and BRIGHT!

Create Your Own Holiday Tuque (Not to be confused with Toque which apparently is subtly different!)

Sew in your LEDs.

The neopixels (individually addressable [fancy way of saying they can be any colour] LEDs) have 4(!) copper, sewable plates in which you will use to integrate your neopixels into your tuque. The through hole copper plates (are small) will serve two purposes, (1) to hold your components into your tuque, and also to provide power, ground and data to all of your components. All of the positives (power) will be connected in series (one after the other), as well as all of the negatives (ground). The data on the other hand is another story. I would start by sewing in your first neopixel in the circuit. The Data In port on that neopixel will be fed by the D6 pin on the FLORA microcontroller. Then, you will use a short strand of conductive thread to run from the Data OUT of the first neopixel, to the Data IN on the second neopixel. Cut that strand, start a new strand to run from the Data OUT of the second neopixel, to the Data IN on the third neopixel… and continue.

Sew in your Microcontroller (and any sensors you may be using).

Finish off your sewing by using conductive thread, and sewing in your FLORA. Since you will be using at least 3 copper pads to sew through, this should be more than enough to hold the microcontroller in place. Don’t worry if you haven’t coded your FLORA yet, this will be the next step. Be sure to stash that battery pack somewhere as well.

Now let’s make that tuque glow! Our friends over at www.adafruit.com have an incredible learning commons that inspire many of our projects. If you have yet to check out their tutorials, navigate your browser of choice over to learn.adafruit.com. For this project, I was originally planning on using the Sparkle Skirt tutorial, where as you move your body, the accelerometer continuously grabs data from a XYZ cuboid plot on a cartesian grid system, and relays that back to the FLORA to say *light up those neopixels*! As you will hear in the video above, a snow storm hit Brilliant Labs, and hindered our coding concentration, and therefore we decided to simply load up the neopixel strand test. If you have yet to setup the Arduino IDE (IDE = integrated development platform), head on over here to Adafruit and they will walk you through how to load up the software and install the neopixel library.
