INNOVATION NEWS BY BRILLIANT LABS

June 2026

As another school year comes to a close, innovation continues to grow

June brings together environmental awareness, emerging technologies and student innovation across the Brilliant Labs community. As the school year draws to a close, this month highlights the many ways learners are connecting creativity, technology and purpose to address real-world challenges.

From celebrating World Environment Day and World Oceans Day to preparing for the upcoming Brilliant Blue Global Challenge, students and educators continue to explore new ideas, build meaningful solutions and strengthen their connection to the communities and environments around them.

Brilliant Blue Global Challenge 2026

The journey continues this October!

Following the success of the 2026 Brilliant Blue National Challenge, teams are now preparing for the next stage of the journey: the Brilliant Blue Global Challenge, taking place this October at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Over the coming months, students from around the world will continue refining their projects, strengthening their prototypes, and exploring innovative solutions that support healthier oceans and more sustainable communities. Working across the challenge categories of Healthy Marine Life, Marine Autonomous Systems, and Marine Renewable Energy, participants are transforming creativity and curiosity into meaningful action.

The Global Challenge will bring together young innovators from different countries, providing an opportunity to share ideas, learn from one another, and showcase solutions designed to address real-world ocean challenges.

As preparations continue, we are inspired by the dedication, collaboration, and ingenuity demonstrated by students across the Brilliant Blue network. We look forward to celebrating their achievements and welcoming teams from around the world this October.

Each year, Ocean Week Canada brings together communities, organizations, educators, and ocean enthusiasts from coast to coast to coast to celebrate and learn about the ocean's importance in our daily lives.

Held during the week leading up to World Oceans Day, the initiative encourages Canadians to explore the connections between local waterways, coastal communities, and the ocean.

Through educational activities, community events, and hands-on experiences, Ocean Week Canada helps raise awareness about ocean stewardship and inspires action toward a healthier future for our oceans and waterways.

Cardboard for Kitty 2026: creativity for a cause

On May 30, students, families, and community members gathered at the Market Square Atrium in Saint John, New Brunswick, for Cardboard for Kitty 2026, a unique event that combined creativity, sustainability, and community impact.

11 teams participated in this year's challenge, designing and building innovative cardboard cat homes in just two hours. Competing in the themed categories Smart Home and Sustainable Snuggles, participants transformed recycled materials into imaginative creations while developing skills in collaboration, problem-solving, and design thinking.

Founded by youth leaders Grace and Hannah Totten, Cardboard for Kitty continues to demonstrate how simple ideas can create positive change. Proceeds from the event support RedHead Strays and First Steps Saint John, helping both animals and families in the community while promoting environmental responsibility and sustainable practices.

We are proud to celebrate an initiative that brings together innovation, compassion, and community action in support of a better future!

Looking ahead to summer

As we move into the final weeks of the school year, June marks a moment to pause, reflect, and celebrate the creativity and dedication shown across classrooms and communities throughout the year.

While programs and projects continue to evolve, the summer season opens new opportunities for hands-on learning through summer camps, workshops, and community initiatives. These experiences will continue to support students in building skills, exploring ideas, and engaging with real-world challenges in meaningful and creative ways.

We look forward to an exciting summer of making, learning, and discovery across the Brilliant Labs community!

Cybersecurity: How to recognize phishing attempts?

Phishing attempts are designed to trick you into sharing personal information such as passwords, payment details, or login credentials. They often appear as messages from trusted organizations but contain subtle signs that something is not right.

Common warning signs include unexpected requests for urgent action, unfamiliar sender addresses, spelling or formatting errors, and links that do not match the official website.

Before responding:
• Take a moment to verify the sender's identity
• Hover over links to check where they really lead
• Avoid entering personal information on pages you didn't navigate to directly
• When in doubt, go directly to the official website instead of clicking links

Staying alert and taking a few extra seconds to check can go a long way in protecting your digital information.
